The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has opened a public comment period on new proposed guidance regarding the release of patients treated with radioactive materials, including radiopharmaceuticals and radioactive implants. The updated guidance aims to improve the accuracy of estimating when patients can be released after treatment, focusing on radiation exposure risks to caregivers and others. Currently, patients can be released if their radiation dose to others does not exceed 5 millisieverts. The proposed changes would introduce new definitions and dose limits, specifically addressing exposure to caregivers who may be in close contact with patients post-treatment. This marks the NRC's second attempt at guidance revision since the last update in 2020. Stakeholders can submit comments until September 10, with discussions planned for August 17 by the NRC's Advisory Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes.
